Go Down to “Children's Games in Art in the 16th & 17th Centuries: van de Venne and Brueghel, not sure if these pictures were ever on the forum.

Found on the over-leaf of William Kenrick's lecture on perpetual motion.

'sGravesande

A translation would be appreciated.

Hi Ralph

If you can post an image of the original text then I'll translate it for you, as your tranfcription here leaves a lot to be defired! ;-) I can work out the places where you've mistaken a long-s for an f, but I just want to check if there are any other mistakes before translating it. Thanks.

This seems to be it, if Ralph doesn't mind me doing the honor:

Stewart,

Dwayne's above copy is spot on! Me and my computer literacy could not figure out how to copy straight from the book,

Ralph,

With Google Books, if you click on the symbol with the scissors where the book pages are being displayed, you can then select part of the displayed page and a pop-up should appear with the plain text and links to an image of just that selected portion.

I tried that initially, but I thought the image of the text was too small, so using the "View/Page Info" option of my SeaMonkey web browser (and with the book page zoomed in), I was able to find and save the image for the whole page. I then cut out the section I wanted using an image editor.

Dwayne,

I forgot to thank you! Thanks!

I am reading the book, which is not all that hard once you acclimate yourself to changing all the "f's" for "S".

Kenrick gets quite involved where he speaks of substances or masses of different materials. Puts a new look on Bessler's AP mention of lead, iron and wax spheres.

Ralph,

You're welcome.

I figured out how to do some of that stuff awhile back when I was hunting down words from those old German dictionaries.

I think I've already read the Kenrick Lecture on the Perpetual Motion, but I may look it over again.

The f and s thing does take a little getting used to.

Thanks Dwayne. Here's my transcription and translation...

Haud facilè inventum perpetuum-mobile purum artificiale; haudquaquam quod fieri non potest:
Bernoulli.

The invention of the purely artificial perpetuum mobile is not at all easy; by no means because it can not be done:
Bernoulli.

Comme il est très-possible qu'un corps monte plus vite qu'il n'est descendu; c'est sur quoi je fonde ma preuve de la possibilité du Mouvement Perpetuel.
'sGravesande.

As it is quite possible that a body ascends more quickly than it descends; that is on what I founded my proof of the possibility of perpetual motion.
'sGravesande.

Thank you Stewart,

I can see reason why Kenrick wrote these in the order he published.

I will hang on to 'sGravesande's version as I believe it to be the correct path to pursue.

You're welcome Ralph. I'll repost my translation of the whole of 'sGravesande's document from which that quote originates.

That would be interesting Stewart, thanks - as I've forgotten the thrust of his arguments.

Are any members here familiar with a forum called "gravinert"?

If so, please inform me regarding the status of this forum. Is it dead, or considered private to select members?

Not often, but I have received a number of links via private mail referring to this forum.

Thank you for any input received!
