Portrait of Karl I von Hesse-Kassel with hand identical to Bessler's

No you are not wrong. Bessler also admits being taught Cabala and the sign comes originally from the Chaldeans representing the “Mother Goddess I believe. Whether Bessler knew this or his intended purpose of the sign (such as belonging to a secret society) would still be debateable.

This engraving has been around a long time. Why haven't we seen it before? At least, I haven't.

Reading here about secret handshakes, signs etc.,i am always amazed at educated folks and their "want"to differentiate themselves by the forming of fraternities, societies etc......a good read on Wilki is "Delta Kappa Epsilon"...i include a few images of a Yale frat.badge from one of my gt.grandads brothers in 1871.

Axel do you really think it is too much of a stretch that Karl went and brought one of his own under his fold?

Not at all.
Do you think it would be a stretch that maybe "frat brothers" could devise a secret plan and hold to it?

Well, the Fifteen of 322 seem to have done so.
Lots o' rumpus was worked-up by those Yalies.
Nice little archive of S & B materials is here:

"WHY is it that the Harvard boys seem always to be working for the Yalies???"
"Hmm, well, we just have no idea."

Why were we not informed of this karl engraving in a more official way than by me?
It's been in existance over 300 years.

Myself and others were aware of the engraving but until I remarked on the hand gesture in Bessler's portrait I don't think anyone was interested. There are very many paintings in the Kassel records, many of which are unidentified as to the subject.

Does the tassel in both portraits have any meaning?

Good question Dax
Wonder what those numbers/letters were under his right arm.
Ironic that the man who played the largest part in helping Bessler didn't get this good engraving shown in a lot of the books.
Did Killian do any other work for Bessler?
Not interested in any clues from these engravings. The history is what is interesting.

Well haven’t had much time to put in it, but here is what I found so far that might be related.
“Masonic: the "Tassel" consists of a cord with tassels on the end. It represents the "Mystic Tie"; that bond which unites men of diverse opinions into one sacred band of Friends and Brothers.

Usually it is two tassels with a knot in the middle like Karl’s portrait.
