Personally, I'd recommend Lego Technic. With such model making equipment you can construct the principles behind models more quickly, which reveals problems in the design that you cannot experience on paper. When finished take a digital photo like I do and put it on record as yet another glorious failure. Then de-construct the parts for a fresh idea.

Below are a few concepts from my vast gallery.

Thanks for all the advice guys the major problem with lego / kinex parts is that they are too small to achieve proper force needed to apply to certain parts, why do you think Bessler's wheels got continually larger?

It's because the force from within grew in scale and the weight from the "runner" could do some useful lifting to the attached stones on the outside.

Unless you're a watchmaker, or close to that anything under 2 or 3 feet in diameter would almost definitely stall at some point if not constructed in a finely tuned manner. Mine will end up being around 6 or 7 feet across.

Joel, I just prefer metal, less flex, especially in conjuction in joining specific bike parts to the framework, and it would be easy to weld that way. Instead of trying to bolt circular tube frame to 2x4's and such.
