Jeff: Think of a shallow shoe box with no top or bottom, only the sides. That is your pendulum arm. Parralel with one short side and close to it an axle - bicycle spoke - passes through holes bored in the long sides. This is the axle or pivot on which the pendulum swings. The axle of course must be fixed in a frame in a horizontal position. The rectangular magnet is attached to the other short side furthest from the axle. : I'm having a hard time visualizing the setup. Lets define some things in Bessler language. You have a pendulum arm attached at the top to a pivot. Something like a spoke attached to an axle and hanging down. On the end of the spoke you have a magnet. The north end of the magnet is in the direction of swing or rotation, but the long axis is parallel to the axis of rotation. The axis of rotation is the axle. Therefore your magnet is parallel with the axle? Or is the magnet parallel with the direction of rotation, which would make it perpendicular to both the axle and the spoke?
