Hey Viper,
Have you thought about having the weight actually pull ITSELF inward on a rotating wheel? It can be done.
(Go to the 'Ideas' section and look up 'Mr Tim's Lever Arm')
Another neat effect of this mech is that while the weight is falling (on the downward side), it is applying leverage all the way down, instead of being in a state of 'free fall'.
(Sorry if the diagram isn't too clear. :)
