The weird letter A reminds me of a scissor mechanism as shown below (o = movable joint):

This specific arrangement reminds me of the gadget for copying a picture that I had as a child...

...the x was fixed to the table, the + is a pencil, and the v is a pointer for tracing. By tracing an image with the pointer, the pencil would draw a duplicate image. In the layout above the image would be exactly the same size as the original, but you could move the pivot points "o" and by doing so the traced image was either enlarged or reduced. Thinking about it, maybe it was the pointer that was positioned at different points along the arm to get different sizes - can't remember now.

Anyway, this is probably just another straw I've grasped, and most likely is nothing, but I thought I'd mention this incase it jogged something in someone elses mind.
