Perhaps we need to look at gravity in the same way we look at other energies, such as light (electromagnetic).

An example:

If we cover the ground with a solar panel, the light/heat (both electromagnetic energies of different frequencies) will not reach the earth.

However, the electricity generated by the panel can still be used to do useful work, if we want it to (e.g. drive an electric motor). The First Law still holds true.

Perhaps we need to look at a Bessler-type wheel as having the potential to also extract energy instead of just letting the gravitational energy "fall" on the earth. (I realise that scientists will laugh at this idea).
