A previous post warned of the hazards of handling lead, fumes, residues on hands, etc. The fishing equiptment industry has switched to bismuth weights as it is less toxic, more envirnmentally friendly, and melts at almost a full hundred degrees less than the m.p. of lead. Casts well, not expensive. Not as dense as lead, but more dense than steel or iron. Falls almost in between densities of the two.

It also has some unusual magnetic properties.
