: Hi Lurker,
: for the perpetual motion, the springs are not necessary. The spring is not used as
: a spring, it is used as a mecanical delay part. Hope that helps you.

Would I be correct in saying that the purpose of the spring is to delay the reaction force of the weight on the wheel due to gravity? For example, suppose that when a weight reaches the bottom of the rotation cycle and then starts to rise against gravity. Could a spring be used to delay part of the reaction against gravity, while the weight is rising, till the wheel begins to go into a downward cycle once again? This way, the wheel will experience less downward force when it is rising than when it is falling.

Lurker.
