Regarding something being buried. You're in a much better position than I to search this out, as you've seen the area and I haven't. From what you know does the region have
1 a mountain stream, or river?
2 a mine....sulfur, or salt? possibly out of a mountain.
3 farm land and hunting grounds?
4 possibly the carrage route could be the counts keep
5 different elevated regions?

Also since he had built a few wheels it is possible to bury one of them ...right?
