Actually, having studied the photos a bit more, the mechanisms near the circumference of the wheel seem to involve a blue bottle connected to some sort of device that moves the weighted rods - it sure looks to me like something which involves more than gravity.

When I asked him if he built smaller models, he replied yes, but they didn't work. I would expect this if the effect is one involving say gravity AND differnetial heating.

What I don't understand is "Why build the thing on such a scale...?"

He also said that he hasn't used it to power anything and was not able to quantify the torque available at the centre.

It is a conundrum at several levels!
