: You mentioned "registering" a design. Fill me in on this if you have time. I know you are busy! John

Hi John, not sure about the rest of the world, but attached the 'basics' about design registration here in NZ. As far as I can see it wouldn't help much to protect the 'function' of a 'Bessler wheel', only the 'looks' of it .. if you engrave some nice patterns and stuff like that.

Cheers,
Rainer

REGISTERED DESIGNS

- Design registration allows for the protection of a new or original design which appeals to the eye.
- Protection can not be gained for a design which is dictated solely by the function the article, to which the design is applied, is to perform.
- Design protection will not cover a method of construction.
- In other words, design registration only protects the way an article looks.
- The law of design registration dictates that the design must be applied to an article via an industrial process. This generally requires that the article, whether made by hand or via industrial machinery, is mass produced.
- Design registration lasts a maximum of 15 years - with a renewal fee payable at 5 years and 10 years.

Excluded Designs:
Works of Sculpture (copyright protection may be applicable)
Wall Plaques and Medals.
Printed matter primarily of a literary or artistic character (copyright protection may be applicable)

Who can apply?
The author of the design.
Employer of author (if author is employed to design)
Person commissioning the author to design.
The assignee of any of the above.
