John,
I think the big issue here is Newton's laws state that energy and heat are the same, therefore it would not be possible to get energy from gravity because its not hot (maybe, we don't know what it is).

Newton would do anything to protect his laws and he did.

Pete.
P.S. finaly made 2 springs that work, on to building the prototype now.

: : Nick,
: : Didn't Newton use his "friends" to discredit Bessler?

: Can I jump in here Pete? I don't think Newton sought to discredit Bessler himself, I think that comments made by him in response to the letters from 'sGravesend and Fischer von Erlach, were seized upon by Desaguliers (Newton's curator of experiments)who had his own agenda, and made use of them for his own ends, namely the promotion of Captain Savery's steam engine, which he had been working on. Desaguliers used the same tactics to dumb down Newcomen's engine too.
