Indeed, it is hard to believe that this simple and powerful principle remains hidden from public knowlege simply by accident. However, I suspect that it is not beyond the ability of mere humans. Dare I say the word "conspiracy"? No, I'd better not. People might think I am I Crack-pot who believes in perpetual motion or some other Crack-pot idea.
