Personally would take one of the shortest sentences with the "X's" and start skipping letters to see if any words formed that made any sense.
He seems obsessed with the emphasized "1717", both straight up and in Roman numerals.
Could "17" be the letters on skips? Plus a short sentence would be helpful considering the "bessler/orffyre"
letter inversion.
Or could he have skipped one letter, then skipped seven letters, and THEN inveteed?
Just some suggestions, not an expert. A good computer program for that purpose might help too.
