I agree that there are obvious drawbacks to allowing anonymous posts. But I tend to think that it also provides some benefits. I was leaning toward allowing anonymous posting in the general discussion forum. And I was considering creating a members only forum, but am now leaning against it since it would be inconvenient to have two separate forums.

What do you all think?

Thanks,
Scott

: Hi Scott,

: I think the board in its present layout is just fine - simple is good. IMO, the board contents should remain open and public, HOWEVER, to add to or partake in discussion I think it should require some form of registration by the user.

: I believe this additional feature would moderate the activities of those multiple identities/fruitcakes. Perhaps you could create an open forum 'Bessler fruitcake discussion' section just for fun :)

: Regards, ovyyus

: : How do you all think I should organize the new board? I was thinking I would create one open, public forum, similar to this one, and one members-only forum. But now I'm not so sure...

: : Maybe we only need one public forum like this one, but logged in users would have special priviledges like the ability to upload files and conduct polls.

: : Or do you think we should have more granular forums, like MT Discussion, Experiments, Theory, etc...

: : What do you think?
: : Thanks,

: : : At last! I've decided to upgrade the board... and soon. Thanks to everyone for bearing with me all this time, and for nudging me to do the upgrade.

: : : Now the question is: which discussion board software should we use?

: : : Here're the requirements as I see them. I would welcome your ideas on other desired features as well.

: : : I think the new board should:

: : : 1. support a public forum (no login required).
: : : 2. also support a members only forum (login required).
: : : 3. support file uploads (images and movies, at least for logged in users).
: : : 4. support polls (initiated by me or logged in users).
: : : 5. be as easy as possible to moderate and maintain (good admin tools and/or support).

: : : I've done some basic research and compiled a short list of contenders. Does anyone have any experience with these boards? Do you have opinions or advice to share before I choose one?

: : : In my order of preference right now, the contenders are:

: : : phpBB (free)
: : : http://www.phpbb.com/index.php

: : : Invision Power Board (free)
: : : http://www.invisionboard.com/

: : : vBulletin ($160)
: : : http://www.vbulletin.com/

: : :
: : : Thanks in advance for any input you have to offer. I'll probably decide on something pretty soon...

: : : Thanks,
: : : Scott
