Unfortunately, most people want "something for nothing". I fail to see how giving away the secret would helped him at all. Then, as now, it takes money to feed and shelter you (and your family). Without being compensated, would he have gotten so much as that (meaning "food and shelter") by "making the world a better place"? I...don't...think...soooo.....
And this brings up another point. If somebody rediscovers the way the wheel worked, and they don't "give the secret away", what makes you believe that you DESERVE to know how it worked? Just because it will "make the world a better place"? Isn't that another form of wanting "something for nothing"?
I realise that I am probably taking an unpopular stance. Get used to it.
